Character
Name: Atsuro Kihara
Fandom: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Time Period: Post-Naoya (Humane) Route
Wing Color: Royal blue
History: Wikia
Personality:
Atsuro’s an enthusiastic and friendly guy, more than often being seen with a smile on his face rather than a frown. His smile is usually also just to comfort his friends, whom he cares about deeply. Throughout the game, he’s seen worrying over those dear to him, Keisuke and Yoohoo—excuse me, Yuzu, especially. When things aren’t looking so great, he’ll try to remain as outwardly optimistic as possible just to cheer them up. This includes teasing them too, of course, like when he calls Yuzu Yoohoo or even Frou-Frou, which he calls her once. Though he can’t really take that teasing well himself, looking at the way he responds to Kaido’s nickname for him, “Nerdlinger,” and Yuzu’s, “Otakuro.” Once Kaido calls him Otakuro too, he just yells, “Otaku-whaaaaaa?! Not you too…” (And then of course there’s the name Yuzu gives him once along the lines of Atstupid, which he just finds dumb.)
On the note of his enthusiasm (and of being an otaku—he did recognize Midori from the internet, after all), it mostly shows when he’s talking about technology and computers, seeing as how they’re big hobbies of his. He takes great pride in his techie skills and enjoys explaining things related to them. Even if those listening don’t understand his jargon, he cheerfully explains them in a way that they can comprehend. Often calling himself Naoya’s Number One Apprentice, he’s also proud of being Naoya’s student.
Atsuro is extremely supportive toward his close ones and those that he respects. He follows the main character of the game in whatever choice he chooses, despite any of his own conflicting beliefs and/or wariness. Even when Yuzu, Midori, and Keisuke all leave the group when the MC chooses to go through with Naoya’s route, Atsuro still sticks by his side and tries to ignore his iffy feeling about it. Besides, he respects Naoya a lot, so there must be a good reason for his plan, right?
Although he is pretty rational and tries to stay realistic throughout the events in the game, Atsuro also tries to be optimistic, which then brings on some idealistic thoughts and solutions. Demons killed many and were the reason for the Lockdown, so most people (like Gin) would just want to get rid of them all. However, Atsuro’s different. Recognizing the power and possible benefits of the demons, he brought up a rather idealistic idea to the MC to just allow for them to coexist with humans under government control.
Atsuro—or rather, AT-LOW, as those on internet forums may know him as—is an internet junkie. He spends the majority of his time on the computer, whether it be talking to people on forums or just cracking and reworking codes for fun. While being online, he’s met and made loads of different friends like 10BIT, most of which are a lot older than him. Their age differences don’t bother him at all though, since the anonymity of the internet makes them all equal, and therefore, they all treat him as an adult. He actually prefers this too, rather than being looked down upon for being so much younger than them. Also due to his excessive use of the internet, he has a rather loose outlook on friends, being he’s used to people just coming and going as they do online and all. He won’t really get overly upset over them disappearing. That’s not to say that he wouldn’t care about them returning though, since he would never forget them and the memories they shared and would happily welcome that back with open arms.
Strengths:
One would think with Atsuro being such a computer junkie that he is frail and not that strong. However, this isn’t the case. If anything, it’s quite the opposite. He’s actually in pretty good shape and has fairly high physical strength, agility, and vitality. Even his magic stat is decent, especially in comparison to Izuna’s.
Atsuro’s extremely intelligent and sharp, both in regards to technology and computers and to problem solving. As far as computers go, he’s a “nerdlinger,” as Kaido calls him, who can crack and even rework coding with ease. Even extremely complex coding is doable, but just takes some more time to accomplish. As for problem-solving, his great memory and logic help him in thinking of various possible solutions to issues, even when given a short amount of time. Usually when coming up with these things, he’ll be found expressing them aloud, either for himself or for those around him to hear it. Even if the people around him have no clue what the heck he’s talking about, Atsuro can and will easily re-explain it in layman’s terms for them to understand. He’s got some patience so he wouldn’t mind.
During the Lockdown, loads of people were pretty much going insane, which is to be expected when they’re stuck in one little area with no electricity or information as to what’s going on for an entire week. Atsuro and the rest of the group were able to stay perfectly sane though. Atsuro’s able to keep calm and stay level-headed as much as possible, even in the worst situations. He can even manage to continue to wear his usual smile during them, partly just to try to help keep his friends calm too. Even with that and his teasing to lighten the mood, he does stay logical and understands what’s going on and the seriousness behind it.
Weaknesses:
Even with his COMP, Atsuro is still human. He’s susceptible to anything that other humans are to such as injuries and illness. Many of his physical attacks also take a lot of energy out of him. Without his COMP though, he’s more susceptible to injuries, since he doesn’t have the strength boost that the device gives him. In that case, he’s really no stronger than any other average guy his age.
As logical as he is, Atsuro isn’t the most cautious guy around, especially when it comes to technology and computers. For example, when given the set of COMPs, he delved right into hacking them and making their files accessible without considering the consequences that may arise (like, you know, being attacked by demons).
That case was partially due to the fact that they were given to the group by Naoya though. He trusts Naoya greatly, being his apprentice and all. Which, on that note, adds the fact that Atsuro’s a follower who holds a lot of trust in those he respects. Because of this, he can get manipulated and even be convinced that bad situations that he normally wouldn’t approve of are actually good. If he truly admires someone, he’ll follow them and hold on to the way that he has always seen them, even if they have changed or just are quite the opposite.
Lastly, due to Atsuro’s habit of getting carried away and thinking aloud, those around him may end up overhearing some of his pessimistic thoughts in a situation. He won’t really stop and realize that his friends nearby may be affected by his way of thinking until after he’s done explaining. Which, after then, he’ll feel guilty and apologize.

First Person:
Hey, guys! I’ve been wondering… does anyone really know how these journals work? I mean, they’re kind of like computers, aren’t they? Well laptops specifically, since they’re portable and all. They could even be like cell phones in the shape of notebooks! But even then, they work everywhere and don’t need to be charged or anything. It’s pretty neat.
And then there’s also the fact that they physically look like they have a limited number of pages. Although that doesn’t exactly seem to be the case, since we can see way more entries than there appear to be pages. I guess it could just be like magic, but it still is technology, so… I’ve been poking at it but I can’t seem to find anything out. So yeah. If anyone knows and can explain it, that’d be great.
Third Person:
Another lockdown, huh?
Or at least, that’s definitely what it felt like. After being in Luceti for only a day, Atsuro was able to gather and read up on loads of things related to the place. The journals and the magic were pretty cool aspects, but there were a few things that were really biting at him: the barrier, and even worse, the experiments. In a way, it felt like he was in yet another lockdown, which he didn’t like very much at all. Of course, the area within the barrier had plenty of more space than that within the barricades of the Yamanote Circle, but <i>still.</i> Just the concept of being trapped inside a limited amount of space reminded him of that awful week. And the lack of demons was definitely made up for with the experiments, which people made out to be terrible and traumatizing. Yeah, Atsuro… really wasn’t too thrilled about being here.
However, there were a few things keeping his spirits up. There did seem to be a lot of kind people floating around (surprisingly not literally, despite the fact that they had wings), and some of them had even said that they enjoyed it here in Luceti, all experiments aside. And then of course, there was also the fact that he had some of his friends from home here.
Speaking of which, it was about time for Atsuro to meet up with them, wasn’t it? Both <i>him</i> and Yoohoo—oh, excuse me, Yuzu. …Oh who is he kidding, she’s forever Yoohoo. Haha! He smiles at his silly thoughts and at the fact that he was going to be hanging out with them today. Being pessimistic about the situation isn’t going to do him or them any good, so for now, he’ll just try not to dwell on the negative aspects of this Luceti place. For now, he’s got some friends to spend time with. With that, he shuts his journal that he had been playing around with, tosses it into his bag, slings said bag over his shoulder, and heads on out of the library.
